Let’s take it back a bit.
If you’ve been with us since the early days, you might remember when Martin was tackling small repairs and weekend jobs as far back as 2015. Maybe you joined us when we officially launched East Coast Carpets in 2018. Either way—thank you. Time moves fast, and sometimes you don’t realise how far you’ve come until you stop and look back.
But if you’re newer here—welcome! We’re East Coast Carpets, and we’re a little different from your average flooring business.
This company wasn’t built from a desire to start an empire or ride a wave of entrepreneurship hype. It was built out of necessity, resilience, and a whole lot of problem-solving.
Back in 2017, I (Gabriella) was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. It was a moment of clarity—realising that working a traditional job just wasn’t going to work for me. My body had limitations that didn’t line up with a 9-to-5, but my brain didn’t get the memo. I wasn’t ready to stop.
That diagnosis was just the start. Over the years, more layers unfolded—chronic joint issues, migraines linked to brain cysts, multiple autoimmune suspicions, and a lifetime of pain and health complications that had been largely ignored. Sprinkle in a surprise pregnancy, mental health challenges, and a recent AuDHD diagnosis—and suddenly, everything made a bit more sense.
Now, you might be wondering—why share all this?
Because at least four times a week, someone asks: “How do you do it?”
And the honest answer is: I don’t always know. I’ve spent years trying. Trying treatments, therapies, diet plans, exercises, specialists, and systems—some worked, most didn’t. But over time, I found a rhythm. I’ve lost 40kg, regained mobility, and even earned the label “Poster Patient” from my rheumatologist. There are still bad days, but now there’s breathing room between them.
And through all this, East Coast Carpets grew. Not just as a business—but as a lifeline. A purpose. A space to pour our energy into something real, something meaningful, something that helps people. And we love it. We love our customers. We love our community. We love the homes we’ve helped transform, the tenants we’ve supported, the landlords we’ve partnered with, and the families we’ve gotten to know.
But to keep going, I’ve had to learn to give myself accommodations.
I’ve had to learn it’s okay to work from bed (like right now, thanks to the flu). It’s okay to say no. It’s okay to change how we do things. And I’ve had to learn to delegate.
One of the first things to go? Social media. As much as I love connecting, coming up with posts and avoiding repetition just drains me. So now I save that energy to work directly with you. And that makes me happy.
Next? Martyr-cleaning. My back physically can’t do it anymore. So Martin and I rebalanced the household load. He tidies up after dinner, giving me an hour of precious family time. And the game-changer? We bought a Roomba. Actually, two. One for us—and one for you.
Our kids named ours Ruby. Ruby vacuums and mops. She’s efficient, obedient, and the best part? The kids now clean the floors before she runs. Our house has never been tidier—and I barely lift a finger.
It’s been a long road, but we’re finally at a place of peace. And we want to share a little of that with you.
